About: It Gets Better was a project founded by Dan Savage, author of the Savage Love column, to help teens who were bullied because they are LGBTQ or thought to be. The project began when Billy Lucas, a 15 year old, ended his life after enduring intense bullying from classmates. Savage wrote in his column, "I wish I could have talked to this kid for five minutes. I wish I could have told Billy that it gets better. I wish I could have told him that, however bad things were, however isolated and alone he was, it gets better.” The column led to a movement -- hundreds of individuals, including President Obama, made videos sharing their own stories and reassurance that things do get better after high school. Snackaholic Productions and MTV followed some of these stories, making two one-hour specials and earning an Emmy Nomination.
